they are not certain; and as far as they are
certain, they do not refer to reality."
Defining Mathematics is
something that philosophers and mathematicians have
always been arguing about, some explain it as a
science that deals with the logic and others claim
it to be a human artifact, containing different
elements. Connoting the most unornamented
explanation of what mathematics is, we can state
that it is a science, studying the space, quantity
and structure and change and an important tool in
various fields for purposes such as calculations, or
for studying the physical objects. There are some
set definitions, concepts in the subject which are
used to form the intricate relationship patterns
between the various quantities and for making
deductions.
Mathematics has
beautifully been defined as the dynamic will, the
reflective reason and the longing for artistic
perfection. The main elements of mathematics have
been listed as individuality and generality, logic
and intuition and analysis done to construe some
meaning out of expressions. Also, it is interesting
to note the view held by many wherein, mathematics
is considered a human activity carried out in the
society and not as something isolated and inhuman
and can be utilized in the social context. In
history, it was argued in philosophy by many,
including Aristotle, Locke, Carnap, Spinoza and
Pythagoras.
But the descent from the
theoretical and philosophical insight to the
practical application is where the science finds its
utility in, as it provides the directions for
drawing the needed conclusions. This practical form
of mathematics contains the elements of logical
reasoning and abstraction and used for studying
numeric quantities and shapes. It has, for years,
been used to study astronomy, land measurement and
in commerce. There are two forms of mathematics,
pure and applied and the applied form uses
statistics, operations research and computer science
to extend its services in the fields of social
sciences, engineering and medicine.
Mathematics finds the use
of entities such as numbers and the number theory,
geometry, algebra, functions and limits, the set
theory, the concept of calculus, probability, the
basic arithmetic operations are addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division and using
appropriate tools to analyze the data and draw
meaningful inferences based on any given data, so it
can be said that it is needed to make proper
statistical and probabilistic decisions regarding
different quantities and physical objects.
Mathematics is the science in which, still there is
a scope of new mind exercises, making new
discoveries and finding concepts with the work done
around new kind of problems that may arise and this
feature makes it an interesting field of study and
research.
